EMAIL, PUBLIC DOMAIN TYPE

Type of Email this section covers

This section really speaks to internet public web sites, and not corporate web sites that might be protected with a fire wall.  An example of this that should work might be a web site where you or a member of your small business owns a website domain name and are using emails based on that website name.  So, such emails might normally be addressed to something like:  John@www.mywebsite.com - where none of that is behind a corporate firewall.  If that is the case, then this is the right section.

Email Setup at Home (on computer, not on your phone)

This section is optional, and this is just advice.  However, I find that emails to mobile phones are much better if they are few in number.  So what I do is the following - which I would suggest, but of course you need not do:

  • I have Microsoft Outlook on my main home computer pull down emails from the website POP3 when I am using outlook at home or at business
  • When I am away, and might use my mobile phone for email, I shut off outlook software on my home computer so just the new emails are on the server
  • I arrange different emails on my personal domain such that there are several names - one for sales, one for webmaster, one for owner, one for personal - etc
  • Then when I use my mobile phone to look for emails, there are only the new ones on the server - and I can look up a specific subject - business sales, personal, webmaster issues, etc.  So I set up multiple email addresses to poll one at a time

One does not have to do the above.  However, I find that mobile email works better if emails are low in number and somewhat sorted to how we think or do business.  The above system works great for me!  In fact, for the most part, it eliminates the desire to get online with a computer and check status of things.

Email Setup online at www.Nextel.com

Before we look for email on our phone, we must set up the email accounts that we wish to monitor online at www.nextel,.com.  You will need to apply there for a name and password.  When you have the name and password, then on the main screen sign in name and password on the right side: "My Nextel".

Then the screen should change and bring you to:  https://my.nextel.com/wps/myportal/mynextel/LandingPage/

On this page, right now about in the middle of the right side, there is link to click on for:  "Mobile Email".  Clicking on that link will now take you to a new page where Nextel will ask you to sign in again as an added precaution.  This time the name is your 10 digit phone number - that of course means no "1" in front, but start with the three digit area code and the 7 digit phone number with no spaces or dashes between the numbers.  The password, at least for me, was the same password I use for signing into the main Nextel.com site.

Then click on "Email" to add or edit email locations.  If you choose add, it will ask you first for what type of email.  Since we are covering public domain web site emails here, click internet.  If you are really looking to cover a corporate account, this is the wrong page.  Please click here.  Next it will ask for what email address you wish to receive and what the password is from the server.  Fill in each of the data fields as requested.

Add more email accounts if you have them - if they are all internet public domain web site email types.

Using Email on Your Mobile Phone

First of all, remember that for there to be a possibility of new emails, that you have to ensure that your home or business computer does not have outlook or other software that is operating constantly emptying the main email server.  In my case again, I normally pull down emails with outlook when at home or at office, but just shut off outlook when I leave to ensure new emails remain on the server.

Side Note:  If going through menus on your mobile phone, if the options have a blue underlined number in front of the option, you can sometimes just press the corresponding number on your keypad to skip to that option.

Start by looking under "Internet" on your mobile phone, and then pick "email".  If it asks which type of email you might want to select "Mobile Email" or a similar title rather than yahoo email or aol or hotmail email.  Next it will show you which email types you have set up that you can monitor one at a time.  Choose the one that interests you first, and you should see the email.  Note that you can use arrow keys to scroll down.  If the email is long, you might have to click a "more" link at the bottom to see the rest of the email.

Done?

If you have reached this point then hopefully you are done and email is working.  If not, and you are an About Wireless customer who had a new cell phone activation in our store, contact us and we will try and help.
