GENERAL MENU HINTS

Forward

Different Nextel Phones work differently.  This section covers menu hints that work with the Nextel phones that we have tried.

Going Forward in the Menu

For many menus that show words on multiple lines, see if the lines have a number in front of them, perhaps in a color blue if your Nextel phone does color, and if it is underlined.  If so, a shortcut may be to just press the number of the option that you wish rather than going down to it and pressing "ok"

Forward too Fast

Going forward in the menu too fast? Sometimes your mobile phone may remember where you left off the last time.  A quick way to get back early in the menu might be to press the red phone hang-up button.  That often will reset a distance back and let you start over.

Going Back to Last Screen

Do not use the upper arrows on the keyboard, but first try the arrow on a bottom key that shows a leftward arrow on a "*" (asterisk) key.  This key will on some phones return one to the last screen.

Going Back further Quicker

Sometimes a quick way to go back much further in the menu, and is something of a screen reset, one can try pressing the red hang-up button to see if it serves as a master reset that takes one back faster in screens.

Text Entry

It is important to know that on a number of Nextel Phones that there is often an option via "abc" controls or menu controls that can change the way a customer can enter information.  Look for this option and select word, or alpha, or numbers, or symbols as you need.  The below is a quick description of using these separate methods of entry:

  • ALPHA - This method allows you to press any number/letter button multiple times till the character you wish shows up.  Note that if the next character uses the same button, that you should either wait until the cursor moves and knows that you are done changing the last character, or use the upper right arrow to set up for the next character entry.  Space will either be with the "#" key or under the "1" key.  Punctuation is often under the "1" key, but may be also under the "0" key.
  • WORD -  This is a fast way to add words quickly, but does take practice.  For this option if you wish a "c" to be added, just press the "1 abc" key once.  Basically you just press the key that has your letter once.  When done with the word, the software will try and determine the correct word from its spelling.  If it shows the wrong word when you are done with the word, try pressing the "0" key and it should cycle between possible words.  Space should be either under the "#" key or under the "1" key depending on the phone.  For punctuation, for example, under the "1" key - only press the "1" key once - and then use the "0" key to cycle through different punctuation.
  • NUMBERS -  this one should just be used for numbers.  Note that if you are in alpha mode that after you cycle past all of the letter possibilities that it will usually give the number for that key as a possibility also.
  • SYMBOLS - for complex symbols, the only solution may be symbols mode.  In some cases in some phones, after selecting a symbol the phone may revert back to the previous mode thinking that you likely only want one symbol

More text hints:

  • SPACES - usually under the "#" key or under the "1" key.  Try the "#" key first
  • Backspace delete - sometimes this is a key marked delete near the keyboard top highlighted on screen.  If not, try the arrow on the "*" key at keyboard bottom
  • Punctuation - usually under the "1" key or under the "0" key.
  • Switching too Often in Word mode - Word mode works well but of course will not do unusual words.  For at least some items such as numbers, you might just decide to spell out "three" rather than switch to alpha mode or numbers mode.

Web Refresh

Sometimes web screens will show an old screen and will not refresh for you.  In this case, try "menu" and pick advanced (sometimes option 6).  Then under advanced there will be a refresh option to load the new revised web page

Okay?

If you have reached this point then hopefully you are using menus well.  If not, and you are an About Wireless customer who had a new cell phone activation in our store, contact us and we will try and help.
