AMPLITUDE

TERMS DICTIONARY

AMPLITUDE

Amplitude means volume of an item, or how much in quantity.  For example, the amplitude of the number 3 is higher than the amplitude of the number 2.  The amplitude of a tall building is more than the amplitude of a single story dwelling.

Similarly, we can refer to the amplitude of a voltage, particularly one used as a signal or even a wireless frequency.  A voltage of +5 volts is higher than a voltage of +1 volts and therefore has a higher amplitude.  However, for voltage, we talk about amplitude being greater the further from 0 voltage.  Such that a voltage of -5 volts has a higher amplitude than -1 volts.

Amplitude can be used as a means for carrying audio information and data information across a high frequency wireless carrier.  We call that amplitude modulation or simply am.  An audio frequency which is much lower normally than the carrier frequency can modulate (add to) a high frequency carrier to make its amplitude larger or smaller at the same rate as the audio information we wish to transmit.  Therefore even though this information is now on a high frequency carrier for wireless transmission, the audio information has been added to it - and can be recovered by a receiver at a distance who wishes to listen to that audio information.
