DSL

DSL is a means of transmitting high speed data over common telephone lines - such as high speed internet.  The way this is done, is that DSL operates at a different frequency than normal telephone conversation, so an electronics filter can keep the data and conversation separate.  DSL will only work a short distance from the local telephone switching office - approximately within 20,000 feet.
