E1

E1 is the European version of a T1 transmission line.  It is a wire line that is designed to handle high speed data communications.  There are two types of common usages of an E1 or T1 line:

  1. It can be used for high speed internet connection to a number of internet users
  2. It can be used in Cellular to connect cellular base stations with the telephone central switching office.  In this second case, it is referred to as backhaul and its purpose is to connect wireless cellular up to the standard wired phone line wires for world-wide communication.
