LAN

LAN stands for Local Area Network.  What it means is a network where a number of computers or similar devices are tied together and can communicate together for exchange of information.  The connection between the computers or other devices can either be by wire, such as cat 5 wire, or by wireless connection.  A LAN might be just 2 or 3 computers, or could be as many as thousands for a large local area business or operation.  A wireless version of a LAN sometimes is called a WLAN.

While some may think of the internet as a connection that connects many computer like devices, a LAN differs.  A LAN is much more local.  Information exchange between computers or other devices is much simpler and more immediate - and often higher speed.   An example of a LAN might be two computers that share files quickly for backup and for business needs.  A printer may also be connected on a LAN such that any computer in the local area or business can use it directly from any of the computers within the LAN area.
