MODULATION

Modulation is a means whereby a low frequency important signal that we are interested in - such as voice or data - is combined with a high frequency carrier for transmission to receivers far away.

There are several ways electronically that the signals can be combined including AM (Amplitude Modulation), FM (Frequency Modulation), PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) and others.  However, for the purposes of understanding, let us just say that the signals are added together during modulation and then transmitted over the airwaves.  On the receiving end there would be a demodulator.  The purpose of the demodulator is to remove the high frequency carrier and recover our original audio or data information.  Continuing with our simple approach that these signals were added together, consider that the demodulator subtracts away the high frequency carrier, leaving us with the low frequency audio and data information that we wished to transmit.

Shows a good example of mixing - modulating in order to transmit long distances using a high frequency carrier (FM example)
