| PACKET "Packet" refers to a small amount of something. In the computer or wireless world, packet usually refers to "packet data". Packet data means a portion of the data that someone might wish to send to another location. Each "packet" would likely not only contain some of the data that is needed, but also a sending and a receiving address such that the system may understand where the information packet is to go. If much data is to be transferred, the data will be broken down into "packets" - each containing a small portion of it. At the receiving end, of course, this data is re-assembled to the complete data message that was intended. The term "data" in the above might refer to voice, text, email, video or other data information. See also IP - Internet Protocol. |
