PARABOLIC ANTENNA

A Parabolic Antenna may also be called a dish antenna.  The parabolic shape is of course similar to a dish in appearance.  The purpose of a parabolic antenna is to concentrate the energy coming into the antenna from a single direction to a high energy reception point.  For receive, visualize the energy coming into the sides of the dish, and then reflecting to a central receiving element.

Parabolic or dish antennas therefore concentrate antenna energy that is arriving or being sent in a very singular direction.   Therefore with this concentration of antenna energy, the antennas are said to be high gain and will be able to receive signals long distances - even from satellites - as long as the dish antenna is pointed in precisely the right direction for the signal to be sent or received.
