POTS

POTs stands for "Plain old Telephone System".  It is the normal means of connecting telephone service to many homes.  While it does well for voice, it is limited in frequency to about 56 Kbps for digital transfer and hence can only use "dial-up" internet services.  Therefore many consumers who wish higher speed data transfer use DSL, or high speed cable internet for data needs.
